And although this issue of Rural Voice can only scratch the surface, we hope you'll enjoy our stories on pollution in the Great Lakes (how much of it is agricultural?) and erosion control. This issue on the air we breath, the land we work and the water we use focusses on farm people who are concerned about our environment. They include people like Norman Alexander, who takes his exhibits on erosion to countless fairs, ploughing matches and other exhibitions) and like Florence and Stafford Johnston who have an unusual farm crop. . .trees. . .on their Perth County acreage. Then we've got a story on a project many people called a pipe dream when it was first proposed. That dream, the Bruce Agri Park near Kincardine, is now producing several crops of cucumbers and tomatoes a year. This environment issue also has a thought-provoking look at the problem of acid rain as it affects farmers. It doesn't, writer Adrian Vos concludes; ozone pollution is more of a worry to agriculture. To help with our coverage of the region's farm news Rural Voice is pleased this month to welcome Donna Thiel, our new correspondellnt from Perth County. Donna lives near Mitchell and has contributed stories to this issue. Watch for her byline on future Rural Voice stories. It's our policy at Rural Voice to write about the people behind the farm issues and the agricultural news of Western Ontario. That in turn has often led to a special relationship with Rural Voice readers. . .we've met some of you and others we hear from occasionally with suggestions and story ideas for the magazine. We welcome readers' comments on our issues and we are glad to get favourite recipes, coming events for a free listing in Rural Voice's Up and Coming column and classified ads for our free classified page. Once in awhile though, as happened this month, we get several listings or ads from readers too late forpublication. Some can be used in our September issue, but that's not much use for an event happening in August. So, for the information of anyone who'd like free publicity for an upcoming event in Rural Voice or anyone sending in a free classified ad, our deadline is the second Friday of the month before publication. That means information for this August issue had to be at our office by Friday, July 11. It seems far ahead of time, we know, but we need a couple of weeks for typesetting, layout, printing and mailing your magazine. That said- we'd like to make special mention of an event a reader tells us about that happens the last Saturday in July , when a Ow of you may already have the August Rural Voice in your hands. It's the Teeswater 4-H horse club's Trail Ride.a-thon, a ten mile ride through scenic trails in the Faulkner Bush are, And you're invited to call Vicki at 392-6547 for further details. the rural Voice Published monthly by McLean Bros., Publishers Ltd., Box 10, Blyth, Ontario.
