Monthly Meeting
The June meeting of the Huron County Federation of
Agriculture was held at the Brookside Public School on
Thursday, June 3, 1980 at 8;30 p.m. with President Merle Gunby
presiding. President Merle welcomed everyone in attendance,
approximately 50. He then read Fieldman Bill Crawford's report.
An OFMA display table was set up for purchases or browsing.
David Little of CANFARM was present at this meeting, he was
available for questions during coffee.
CORRESPONDENCE:
1. Letter from AGRICREW on Summer Employment Programs
for Youth in Huron County.
2. Letter from Huron County Junior Farmer Roger Morrison
informing us of a Tractor Safety Rodeo being held in Exeter on
June 28 at the Exeter Fair Grounds. This is being sponsored by
Huron County Junior Farmers, John Deere Ltd., and the Farm
Safety Association. For more information contact 482-3428.
3. Letter from CUSO (Overseas Employment Opportunities) . .
. for more information Wednesday, June 11, 1980 an information

us of the annual meeting in West Wawanosh coming up Wed.
July 16, 1980 at Brookside School, Potluck Supper at 7:00 p.m.. .

Louise Marritt introduced the two speakers from RURAL
DEVELOPMENT OUTREACH PROJECT at the University of
Guelph, Dr. Julius Mage, from the Geography Department and
Dr. George L. Brinkman, from the Agricultural Economics and
Extension Education Dept. They spoke on 'Absentee
Ownership' and 'Foreign Ownership' then answered any
questions. Walter Elliott thanked the nuc sts.
Some of the facts and figures were as follows: Huron County .
. . only up to November 1979• Foreign .Owned . . . 7,238
acres; Non -Ontario but Canadi an .1,432 acres; Non Local but
Ontario . . . .28.680 acres; Luca! Urban 28,552 acres.
As of Nov. 1979 there were no foreign owners in the township
of McKillop, Tuckersmith, Turnberry or East Wawanosh.
PHASE I1 of the program is being finalized this summer with
the help of two students hired to interview lessees or neighbours
of these properties. Shelly Paulocik is a local farm girl from
Bluevale, and Ted Gruszka is an M.A. student in geography
from the University of Guelph.
Jack Riddell spoke a few words on his feelings on foreign
ownership in Huron County.
Lunch and coffee was served by Ashfield Township
Federation.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30 on a motion be Grant
Curran.
