federation meeting
The minutes of last month's meeting were approved on a
motion by Jack Tebutt, as printed in the Rural Voice, seconded
by Case Brand. Carried.
President Merle Gunby reported on the Farmers' March to
Ottawa last week. Any individuals who are requesting immediate
assistance with problems are urged to write directly to Eugene
Whalen, the Agriculture Minister.
CanFarm rep for Huron County, Don Little of Dashwood spoke
briefly on the subject. Anyone wanting to get in touch with him

Case Brand introduced the guest speakers from the Ministry:
Norm Richards from Ministry of Natural Resources, Wingham
showed a film on trout streams, spawning areas and means in
which streams can be built up to help the trout population
prosper. John Godell from the Ministry then gave a slide
presentation about the same topics. Doug Dodge, Supervisor for
the Federal Ministry of Natural Resources, Toronto spoke on

Presentation by the Rural Development
Outreach Project (R.D.O.P.)-the results of
their initial investigation into absentee
ownership of farmland in Huron County.
Speakers will be Dr. George Brinkman and
Dr. Julius Mage, University of Guelph.

Resources, Doug Dodge, John Godell and Norm Richards then
held an open discussion with questions being asked from the
floor.
Jack Tebbutt, President of Goderich Township, thanked the
speakers. Gordon Hill, Chairman of the Huron County
Properties & Land Use Committee read the minutes of their
recent meeting with members of the Ministry office in Wingham,
along with several recommendations that were made to make
working together with the two groups more feasible. Tony
McQuail moved we accept this report plus the recommendations.

A resolution from the properties and land use committee was
also read by Gordon Hill:
Whereas the federal government deems it advisable to protect
fish habitat to provide improved sport fishing opportunities and
Whereas the Government of Ontario agrees and the Ministry of
Natural Resources is enforcing federal fish habitat protection
laws. Therefore be it resolved that OFA• be requested to petition
the proper authorities so as to ensure that where farmers are
prevented from draining land or put to increased costs to provide
fish habitat. or wet lands. or provide lands for public benefit.
they are suitably reimbursed by exemption from property tax. or
government sharing project costs or a combinatin of both.

A pamphlet "Background Information Wingham District Land
Use Strategy" was circulated for study. Tony recommended that
any individuals write directly to Ministry of Natural
Resources. Wingham. The Federation to follow up in the fall
when farmers are not so busy. Also anv input can he brought to
May 29 Directors meeting at OMAF office.
Meeting adjourned at 10:50 p.m.
