The Rural Voice, 1980-05, Page 19show the farmer in bib overalls and straw
hat.
1 guess the world won't end if farmers
have to live with this image for another
generation but it is a little ridiculous to
perpetuate for yet another generation an
idea of farm life that was out of date when
the parents of today's children were
children. Farm life to these children looks
like a wonderful life where you can get to
keep as many pet cows and chickens and
horses as you like.
Ironically while this image is . sold to
children we still have the other image
being sold to adults: the one that nobody
but a dummy would live on the farm (I'll
bet that these days with high interest rates
and low prices many a farmer might agree,
but that's another matter). The old "How
you going to keep them down on the farm
after they've seen Paree" theme is still
prevalent in the image of farming given to
the urban adult.
I suppose there's not much the farmer
can do about the image to the urban adult
except fight it each chance he gets. Farm
groups should start fighting however with
the educational authorities to get them to
change the false image of farming in school
books. If farmers could get the real truth
about farming across to the children today,
perhaps the problems of the farmers of the
future wouldn't be quite as bad as the
problems of the farmers of today.
