The Rural Voice, 1980-05, Page 13foot irrigation track, spraying the plants to a distance of 300 feet
on each side.
It takes two men about three hours a day to position the
irrigation equipment for spraying during the night. But it pays,
according to Frank Soudant, particularly on the light soils of their
farm, even if the capital cost is high.
The varieties grown are: Superior, Katatin. Kennebec and
Sebago.
Planting time is around the tenth of May until the 30th. While
potatoes can recover after a frost, the yield will alway§ be down.
The herbicide used is mainly Sancor, but also Linuran and
Romexol.
The average yield is 400 bushels an acre which at $2 a bushel
before processing is below cost of production.
One of the costs is the spraying program. Every seven to ten
days spraying is a must to prevent diseases that would ruin the
crop.
The old need to rotate in order to prevent nematodes is no
longer necessary, as these microscopic pests are controlled with
a granular insecticide, applied with the planter.
The Soudant brothers practice green fertilization. They seed
rye in the fall, after harvest, and plow it down in the spring prior
to harvestine.
LITTLE PLOWING
They don't really have to do much plowing, for the harvesting
machinery goes so deep that the soil is loosened to a fair depth.
Frank Soudant echoed the complaints of farmers and small
businessmen everywhere about the unreasonably high cost of
borrowing money.
These two enterprises are family operations in the best sense
of the word. They will struggle on until times improve. They will
survive, for they have that inner strength that made farming in
Ontario.
