Mrs. Rock said one of the things at the
conference was to get a few leaders
together to get their individual ideas to see
what they could come up with and anything
they should drop. Around 90 leaders
attended the conference, she said.
She said Father Tom McKillop had
talked about Johr. Howard Griffith, the
man who wrote Black Like Me, and said
how even though he's lying in the hospital
with cancer, he still likes a challenge. Mr.
Rock said he was just trying to get through
to leaders that they should keep "above it
all and keep happy with their life."
He also indicated that they should try to
get through to all 4-H members that
they're really needed in the club.
"That's what all the speakers were
trying to get through to us," Mrs. Rock
said.
Mrs. Rock also attended a session called
the trials and tribulations of being a
voluntee-. She said 4-H leaders are
volunteers. You're into working with young
people and leading them in the right
direction, she said.
In the commodity group discussion,
people from different counties sat in
groups of about ten at a table, so that
individual opionions from different parts of
Ontario were heard.
Mrs. Rock also said that in her club,
most parents don't seem to be very
interested in what the 4-H members are
doing but her biggest problem is a lack of
members. Part of that problem stems from
the fact that Monkton hasn't had a beef
club for 15 or 20 years. This year they've
only got five members.
Compounding the problem is the fact
that there are so many 4-H clubs around
her area, that Mrs. Rock doesn't have
much territory to pick from. There are also
different kinds of clubs that the young
people could be involved in where they
wouldn't have to bother with the expense
and the work of a calf.
Asked her opinion of the leadership
conference Mrs. Rock said, "1 think it
made you learn what those speakers said
about the kids, to treat them all equal, to
make them all feel wanted or needed in the
club."
