Perth County beef farmer who uses both
systems, but shows a definite leaning
towards the round bales.
The biggest disadvantage. he says, is
that you need a lot of different equipment
and that the whole feeding system has to
be changed to adapt to the round bale.
He said probably the biggest advantage
with the round bales is that one person can
do the baling with a minimum of labour.
With the square bales, you have to have a
lot of help, or you can't do it, he said.
For feeding just roll the round bales out
and the cattle have free access to the feed
all the time, Mr. St einacker says.
"Another thing is, mostly we store these
outside, so keeping them is no problem."
He said normally in January, February
and March when there is snow he uses the
square bales.
"If you were building a barn today, 1
would think you would go to the round bale
system. You could adapt very easily to it.'
he said.
On their operation they have a built-up
area in a hillside where they can store the
bales so that any water runs off them. He
said if they had to store them in a flat area,
the bales would get soaked.
The reason they don't go completely to
round bales is because they don't have the
facilities for them, so rather than leaving
an empty shed and building a new barn, he
puts some square bales in.
