The Rural Voice, 1980-03, Page 25"Not in
my backyard"
On of 17 areas in southern Ontario that
Toronto consultant feels would be suitable
for liquid waste disposal and treatment
operations is located near the town of
Hen call.
Orlando Martini, a consulting engineer
with James F. McLaren Ltd.• said that the
selection of the areas was "just an office
exercise.. .we haven't done any field work
yet."
Mr. Martini, who did the study for the
Ontario environment ministry, outlined his
finding at a meeting of the London
Chamber of Commerce energy and environ-
ment committee. Some of the other
recommended locations for liquid waste
disposal are 15 miles north of Goderich, a
minimum disposal site just east of Aylmer,
another site eight miles south of Strathroy
and numerous sites in Bruce and Grey
counties.
Industrial waste, according to Mr.
Martini, is "just as inevitable as the
housewife's dish water. just as inevitable
as the stuff we flush down the toilet."
He told audience members that facilities
for disposing of hazardous wastes are
necessary and people will have to get over
the "not -in -my -back -yard syndrome. . .or
we'll never solve the problem."
