"Milk is good
only if you get paid for it"
I recently attended two all day dairy information
meetings and a quota exchange meeting. I was
surprised to see that less than 20% of the farmers were
under the age of 30. It seems our dairy industry is
running out of young blood and that is a poor way for us
to be heading into the eighties. My biggest complaint is
about the 15% transfer assessment applied to an
on-going operation transfer. How can a young dairy
man starting out make a living with today's high input
costs, high capital costs combined with high interest
rates and a 15% reduction in the quota available from
the previous operator? Milk is good but only if you get
paid for it. The new operator is forced to divert some of
his effort to something other than the production of
milk. And that can be hard to do on today's specialized
dairy farms. So his spirit gets "killed in the bud" and
the Ontario dairy industry has lost another potential
young producer. That is not so good if the industry is to
remain viable in the n"ext decade. 1 think the OMMB
should reconsider its policy on this 15% transfer
assessment for on-going operation transfers. Thank
You.
