The Village Squire, 1981-10, Page 21edition and guided its change from three
to six sections.
"All my big jobs have been creative,"
says Larone, but none, he admits, more
challenging than the creation of the all
new Canadian Living magazine,
"It was a very tough challenge,
much harder than 1 anticipated," he says.
It took eighteen months for the magazine
to develop the proper mix and find its
ground. Now Larone says he's leaving it
alone, with good people, to do what it does
best.
He's concentrating instead on TV
Guide, and its battle with any number of
television listings which are given to
viewers free or in the form of supplements
to newspapers or othe Tpublications. The
Guide has been losing ground and it's
Larone's job to take it back to the top.
Changes include an increase in the
magazine's attention to sports and
analysis of sporting events.
Travel, both on the job and to get to it,
have long been a part of Ken Larone's
weekly fare and he concedes that living
apart from his family so much is his
biggest regret.
But while honing his competitive edge
he has also learned :low to relax, and
that's where the return to Huron County
comes in. He loves the family home.
where the backyard slopes down to the
Bayfield River. And he enjoys the working
with an area farmer with whom he share
crops his acres.
There's a sensitivity to nature here and
time.Larones say they don't miss a hectic
Toronto social life.
Ken is impressed by the outpouring of
community support whenever there's a
tragedy in the rural area. His neighbours
are friendly, concerned about each other.
At home on the land in Huron County.
Ken Larone is interested in the
family store (now called Larone-Spittal
incorporating Nancy's maiden name) and
the career and scholastic endeavors of his
daughters Cindy, Bonnie and Cathy.
He's never set down a master plan for
himself so he can't tell you what he might
be doing down the road. "If you have
energy and ability I don't think age has a
helluva lot to do with it. I enjoy my life.
I've done things; I've tried to do well.
Satisfaction has been there."
Tough to argue with that.
More than a magazine. .
