The C.S.5. Admiral Bayfield
It was a coming home of sorts for the Canadian
research ship Bayfield earlier this summer, when it
paid a visit to its namesake village on the resort
shores of Lake Huron.
Actually, both the ship and the village drew their
names from the pioneer nautical surveyor, Admiral
Henry Wolsey Bayfield, who plotted the same shores
many sunsets ago.
The Bayfield Historical Society marked the
occasion in fine fashion, with a noon -hour reception
in Clan Gregor Square. There were scouters and
pipers and a light lunch. There was also the
presentation of a picture of the Bayfield River to the
ship's captain.
After the official ceremonies the public was ferried
to the anchored ship and allowed to inspect its
computerized equipment and mini -laboratory. The
C.S.S. Bayfield is a vehicle for the marine biological
research in the summer months.
