Maple syrup- great over ice cream.
terrific with cereal, delectable on pan-
cakes. On Saturday. April 4, nature's
sweetener. and those who fancy the
glistening liquid, will flow over Elmira to
celebrate the 17th annual Elmira Maple
Syrup Festival.
Festivities begin at 7 a.m. in Elmira
and although arriving early won't help
you beat the crowds, it will increase your
chances of getting fresh baked goods and
a better selection of craft and antique
items.
Fresh hot pancakes with butter and
thick. rich maple syrup are the best way
to begin your visit to Elmira. This year
breakfast will be served from 7:30 a.m.
until 4 p.m. at the exhibits building. a few
short blocks from downtown. Prices
range from $2.50 for a double portion, to
a single portion price of $1.50. Both
include a choice of coffee or milk.
Once you've eaten more pancakes than
you thought possible. sampled the syrup.
the candy and the shoo -fly pie, it's time to
continue downtown to the Arthur Street
outdoor mall.
Aside from the endless array of
mouthwatering sweets, sausages, pies
and cakes, over 100 booths will be selling
crafts characteristic of the Waterloo
County area. including quilts, paintings,
woodwork, leatherwork and appleface
dolls. Demonstrations of the old-
fashioned method of boiling down sap
will also be included. The mall opens at 7

a.m. and closes around 4:30 p.m.
Admission to the four -block area is free.
After spending a few hours walking
around Arthur Street, take a Toad off your
feet and let someone else do the driving.
Buses and guides will leave every
hour beginning at 9 a.m. on a two -and -
a -half hour countryside heritage tour. For
a cost of $3 or $1.50 for children under 12.
buses will chauffeur you to various points
of historical interest including a renovat-
ed schoolhouse, a buggy works, an
old-fashioned general store and a black-
smith shop.
Included in the heritage tour is a trip to
West Montrose, home of the only covered
bridge still in existence in Ontario. Six
trips are offered with buses leaving even
hour until 2 p.m.
To better understand how nature
produces the sweet sap everyone has
been raving about, don't miss a visit to
the sugar bush. Buses will leave continu-
ously from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. taking
visitors to local maple bushes to see
preparations involved in collecting and
refining maple sap. The cost for the trip is
$2.50 for adults and 50 cents for children
under 12.
An antique show and sale featuring
Waterloo County collectibles opens Fri-
day, April 3, from 6 p.m. until 10 p.ni.
and again Saturday from 8 a.m. until 5
p.m. Foran admission price of $I you can
select your own piece of nostalgia. The
sale will be held at the new parimutuel
building on the corner of Snyder and
Ernst Streets, adjoining the Grandstand.
Arts and crafts will be sold in the
Elmira Secondary School auditorium
located a few blocks from downtown.
Quilting. weaving. spinning. rug hook-
ing, jewellery. china painting. ceramics.
apple dolls and other crafts typical of the
area will be displayed and sold. Admis-
sion is $1 for adults and 25 cents for
children under 12.
Although it may appear festival organ-
izers are trying to rake a bundle from the
admission prices ci.arged at nearly every
exhibit, it is comforting to know profits
from the festival are given to local
charities, the major share to the Associa-
tion for the Mentally Retarded. Because.
of festival donations made in past years.
the association has developed a school,
workshop and home for the retarded in
the Elmira area.
