A one man show
Only mixed reviews greeted Vincent,
The Story of a Hero, a one-man show
starring American actor Leonard Nimoy,
when it made its brief visit to Theatre
London in late September.
The play is concerned with the tragic,
heroic life of Vincent Van Gogh, the
Dutch artist who painted more than 1800
works in 10 years. Only one of those
paintings sold in his lifetime, which
ended when the artist committed suicide.
In the show Mr. Nimoy portrays
Vincent's brother, Theo, an art dealer
who supported his old brother in the last
ten years of the painter's life.
It was Theo's unbending faith in
Vincent's skills which led him to keep his
brother afloat economically." Theo
believed Vincent would be to art what
Beethoven is to music," explained
Leonard Nimoy in a pre -performance
press conference.
The play is set shortly after Vincent's
suicide, and Theo has called together
critics, artists and others who might
listen, to defend his brother and his
tempestuous life.
Mr. Nimoy, better know as Mr. Spock in
the Star Trek television series, purchased
the rights to the play from a Denver
author. He said that although two or
three other Canadian cities had been
considered to host the play as well,
scheduling difficulties meant the only
performance outside of the United States
was London.
Lemton.
"I can't think of a more beautiful
theatre than this one," said the actor
explaining why London was included on a
30 -city tour. "I was invited here, I had
heard wonderful things about the theatre,
so I came."
Besides his television and stage career,
Leonard Nimoy has also published
several books of poetry.
