Village Squire, 1980-11, Page 20Scheu said they've already found some theatregoers will come to
the tearoom every morning for breakfast. The partners plan to
continue the delightful tradition - the tearoom is open until the
festival season ends early in November. But eventually, after
renovations are complete, and the kitchen a little roomier, the
Fanfare owners hope the tearoom can be open all year.
Just to encourage visitors whose mouths may still be watering
after tea,a roomful of cookbooks featuring ethnic recipes, health
food guides and books on nutrition. is strategically placed
outside the tearoom.
Hildburg Scheu and Maurice Poujade also plan to continue
furnishing the store with Canadian antiques. The antiques.
according to Mr. Poujade, serve "as excellent props" for books
on Canadiana and the theatre.c Since antique collecting was one
of Mrs. Stafford's hobbies, the new owners are going to rely on
her to bring in more reminders of our past. They have kept the
pine desks and other antique furniture to display special books
and to hold the greenery which creates such a restful atmosphere
in the store.
CANADIAN BOOKS
When visitors first step inside Fanfare Books, they encounter
books written by or about their fellow Canadians. Right now, the
partners are busy unpacking the Canadian selections aimed at
the Christmas market.
One book they hope will be particularly popular in this area is
the novel Odd's End, written by Tim Wynne -Jones, who
teaches in Waterloo. Mr. Wynne -Jones' book won the S50,000
Seal Award offered annually for the best first novel, and has
already been praised by critics.
A book which proved popular in the past and has been
re -issued, is Betty Jane Wylie's guide for the newly -widowed,
titled Beginnings. Mrs. Wylie, a former Stratford resident. was
married to the late manager of the Festival.

Another new book by an area author expected to arrive for
Christmas sales is Towers At The Edge of The World, by Virgil
Burnett, who teaches fine arts at the University of Waterloo. The
art book features the "demons and dragons, invasions and
plagues and princes and sorcerers" once found in a medieval
town.
Other books which might attract local readers include
Floodtides of Fortune, Toronto author Adelle Leitch's history of
Stratford, and Reckless Water, an historical novel by Stratford
writer Nella Benson.
GOOD, GENERAL BOOK STORE
Although Hildburg Scheu and Maurice Poujade will continue
to stock books they hope will appeal to Festival visitors they also
want to make Fanfare a good, general book shop and to "bring in
more books that will appeal to people here", the year-round
residents of the area. Already they've started stocking the
textbooks on the Grade 13 reading list and they hope to start a
science fiction section to interest teenagers.
Children, as always, will still be welcome at Fanfare. While
their parents browse. they can sit on small chairs and read the
books that are their own particular favorites from Dennis Lee's
Alligator Pie to the British Paddington The Bear.
For parents who don't have time to read to their children, and
perhaps feel slightly guilty about the fact, the store includes a
selection of children's records. These include recordings with
fairy tales read by Festival actors Maggie Smith and Peter
Ustinov.
What does the future hold for the partners of Fanfare Books?
Success. they hope. but more importantly, "we hope to be
contented and happy" Ms. Scheu says. Their new profession,
adopted after a visit to "an unusual bookstore" seems ideal, for,
as Ms. Scheu says: "We love books."
