Village Squire, 1980-11, Page 7Paper Says Put, will be at the shop for National Book Week, November 15-22. THE COUNTY MOUSE The Country Mouse Book Store at 621 Richmond also offers an impressive variety of books for children. Owner Marilyn Parris has a special fondness for children's literature, and her interest is evident in the many charming titles that she carries as well as in the name she chose for her shop. "The Country Mouse" conveys Ms. Parris's wish for a name with a soft, country sound, and also contains literary allusions to Aesop's fable about the Town Mouse and the Country Mouse, and Beatrix Potter's Tale of Johnny Town Mouse. The store is a cozy mixture of juvenile and adult fiction and non-fiction, with well-chosen sections on feminism, cookbooks, gardening, art, and many others. Engaging stuffed animals are perched among the books, and there is a small sampling of antiques for sale. Cards, gift wrap, book plates, and posters are on display, as well as a wide variety of calendars, including ones on Kliban's Cats, Harrowsmith, unicorns, Canadian scenes, and even a runner's log book calendar for those who wish to keep track of their progress on a daily basis. Ms. Parris feels that if a book store is responsive it will grow around community needs, and her own shop contains a perfect example of this belief. Shortly after the store opened eight years ago, Ms. Parris was approached by her children's ballet teacher about selling dance slippers to students. What began as a small space item behind the counter has now evolved into a full line of dance supplies in a separate room of the store. The theme is continued throughout the shop with books, posters, calendars, and tote bags, all with a ballet motif that adds an extra charm to the surroundings.
