Village Squire, 1980-11, Page 5UP FRONT When it's cold and dreary outside there's nothing more restoring than curling up with a good book. It's to that principle that this November issue of Village Squire is dedicated. And we have our own contribution to the read -more -this -winter campaign, a short story by Ontario writer Brock Shoveller. Canadians traditionally buy more books at Christmas than any other time of the year and with that in mind we have a guided tour to some of London's specialty and used book stores. Stratford's not a lightweight in the bookstore sweepstakes either. We have a story on the new owners at Fanfare Books and a cozy used book store called Chapter 2. Our bookstore guide is not meant to be definitive - we know of interesting shops in Listowel, St. Marys and Grand Bend, and other places too. In fact the tough thing about planning this story was the sheer number of Western Ontario bookshops to choose from, a number unheard of 10 years ago. The variety of interesting people in our area continues to astound too. This month Village Squire writers talked to longtime NHL Hockey trainer Angelo Nigro who lives near St. Marys, Patrick Smith, artistic director of the very successful Grey -Wellington Theatre Guild and a Varna area man, Ivan McClymont, who collects G.A. Henty and other first editions. We've got an unusual day trip this month too . . . a visit to a naturalist's paradise. Believe it or not the Sifton Bog is inside the city of London. If your like most of us, are comtemplating you: Christmas shopping with a weary sigh, we've got the answer. Just send all those on your list a subscription to Village Squire, a year long gift of all the fascinating places to go and people to see in Western Ontario. You can fill out the coupon elsewhere in this issue and we'll take care of the rest. Our photo contest Village Squire is looking for entrants in its January photo contest. Black and white 8 x 10 prints of Western Ontario people, scenes and special events should be submitted by Monday, December 1. Prizes, donated by Campbell's Cameras, 168 The Square, in Goderich are a $40 gift certificate for first place and for two honourable mentions, $10 gift certificates. Entries, marked "photo contest" should be sent to Village Squire, Box 10, Blyth, NOM IHO. The readers write Please renew... Please renew our subscription for another year for whic}t we enclose a $5.00 money order. We enjoy it very much: the places to eat; trips and stories of various types of business, and, of course, McGillicuddy's Diary. Yours truly John Petford 124 Glastonbury Cres. Stratford So much was familiar My October issue arrived this week and so much was familiar and of interest to me; especially "Cherrydale Farm." As Michael Fisher was an ancestor of mine, would you please send the October issue to my brother (address below). Enclosed you will find 1.00 for magazine and postage. Thanks your magazine is priceless. Phyllis T. Mannell Tillsonburg, Ont. Have saved all the Village Squires You may be interested to know that I had saved all numbers of Village Squire since the start of publication (except one) and I have given them to the Archives of the Huron Historical Society in Goderich. The one that's missing is, I think, the second number of the first year. It's an interesting and well read magazine. Sincerely Evelyn Olde Box 297, Clinton. A number of interesting reports Enclosed is my cheque for $2.00 in your favour. Would you please send to me at the above address, two copies of the October 1980 issue. As a member of the Architectural Conservatory of Ontario I found a number of interesting reports in the current issue, particularly those relating to Goderich and to the dangers one must cope with if considering cleaning of masonry buildings.
