Village Squire, 1980-10, Page 39A
On visiting an abandoned farm
by Gladys Nolan
Dreams lie buried in this house
that stands deep in stark despair
where twisted trees, ghosts and weeds
and aftermath of fire
surround the old forsaken place
that once filled all the needs
of one who set the beams and walls
where a hungry mouse now feeds.
From the wood and coal stove oven
the aroma of home-made bread
haunts the spacious kitchen
where one who is long now dead
shaped the souls of her children
as they said their prayers at her knee
while she prayed for their safe -keeping
and wisdom to set them free.
Yes, there 's many a dream that is buried here
in the crumbling old abode
the old old house that is falling down
in fields by the side of the road.
