Village Squire, 1980-10, Page 4UP FRONT
Some people love 'em, a few people hate 'em. But it's
extremely difficult to stay indifferent to one of Western Ontario's
most intriguing resources...its old buildings.
That's especially true of those who have gone through the
tearing -your -hair -out experience of renovating one. This month
Village Squire reports on two projects which involved
transforming fairly derelict houses into comfortable family
homes.
We've talked as well to some pros in the renovation business
and writer Alice Gibb explores the work of a Goderich group
dedicated to preserving the best of our architectural heritage.
For those interested in more contemporary housing we've got
a description of an energy efficient home that's recently been
built near Blyth.
But that's not all. Candy Forest and Paul Aston are talented
musicians performing in Stratford and Susanne Jones visited
them for Village Squire.
Then for the fall, "let's take a drive" season, we've got two
day trips, one to a country fair and another to Oktoberfest and
other Kitchener -Waterloo attractions.
We want to remind readers of the contests for a Village Squire
cover sketch and a story for our Christmas issue. Winners in
each category will receive S25 and the deadline is Monday,
November 3. The drawing should be in black ink, of cover size
and the story 1000 to 2000 words.
In January Village Squire is sponsoring a photo contest. Black
and white 8 x 10 prints of area people, scenes or events, suitable
for publication in the magazine, should be submitted by
Monday, December 1. A number of prizes will be offered.
So put those typewriters, cameras and pens to work...
We goofed!
The cook and restaurant in a photo in last month's Village
Squire were incorrectly identified. The cook. named in the
picture as Rick Wiley of Kathy's Truck Stop, was in fact Simos
Euripides, owner of Diana's Restaurant in Listowel. The Village
Squire apologizes for its error.

Restaurant disappoints
1 received your excellent magazine in the mail, and on your
recommendation we went to the Triple K Restaurant.
I am sorry to say, my husband and I were not impressed with it
at all. Maybe we picked a bad night, but we had Fried Chicken
Dinner for $3.75 consisting of three pieces each, one very small
drumstick, one of rib and one thigh, (the only one to have much
eating to it)
The Salad was a serving of Cole Slaw (no prizes for it) on our
plate, the potatoes were undercooked, and a cob of field corn (not
sweet corn). I guess they mistook us for cows.
The coffee cost extra and no refill was offered, which you get
any where else. Jello was extra, the soup was good, but on the
whole a disappointing meal.
I would like to suggest you check the little restaurant at
Vanastra on highway 4 for good food and reasonable prices. All
meals include a Salad Bar, (all you can eat) a wonderful variety of
vegetables cottage cheese, potato and macaroni salad, jellied
salads, etc. His liver is the best in the area. My husband is
retired and we eat out a lot, so we try a lot of places, but we
always go back to Vanastra.
Hope you don't mind our opinions, good luck to your very
informative magazine.
