Village Squire, 1980-07, Page 17they have fenced the river from cattle so
plants will grow and create shade. You will
note hundreds of tiny trees have been
planted between the road and the river.
BACK TO INITIAL TOUR—Turn left
(north) on County Road 1 and drive up to
Lucknow, a village named after the Indian
Mutiny town. Some of the streets are
named after generals in the war. I would
recommend a stop at the "Sooper Scoop"
ice cream parlour, just to the right around
the corner. A real good selection of ice
cream!
Turn left and head west on 86 highway
(the division line between the counties of
Bruce, to the north and Ashfield to the
south.) You'll notice lots of flat farmland,
we are out of the hilly country now. As you
head for the lake, pass Lochalsh, over the
18 Mile River, and then a left turn on
Sideroad 12, Ashfield W.D. which is
plainly marked on a sign. Go south one
block, then turn right on the 12 concession
(west).
At the stop sign (Highway 21), continue
straight ahead (west), toward the lake, past
Keewatin Camp to Ashfield Park. You are
advised to leave your car at the top of the
hill near the pavi lion. Take the steps down
to the lake or follow the roadway. A good
place for a picnic, to swim or relax.
Back to Highway 21 and the twelfth
concession and go right (south). This is
known as the Bluewater Highway even
though Lake Huron cannot be seen from
the road.
Moving right along, you pass Kintail,
Kingsbridge, Sullivan's Restaurant (on
your left) and M.J. Smith Seed and Grain
(this site was formerly a wartime air base.)
Turn right at Drury Lane Road - you are
now heading into Port Albert.
Opposite the store (on your left), make a
hairpin turn to the right and stop to see the
Port Albert Fishway.
A fishway is a man-made structure
which allows fish to by-pass a dam or any
other structure that would block or partially
block their upstream movement. The
Ministry of Natural Resources set this one
up for the rainbow trout, in particular, so
the migratory trout could utilize the many
miles of spawning and nursery habitat
located along the Nine Mile River water-
shed.
If you continue past the fishway, you will
come to the beach area and the mouth of
the Nine Mile River.
Back at the store again in Port Albert,
turn right (south) over the bridge and up
the winding hill into the "suburbs" of Port
Albert.
Rejoin highway 21 and proceed right
(south), round the curve and turn left at the
Auburn sign (this is the Ashfield, Colborne
township division line) and drive east to
return to Nile. If you made it, then you
didn't get lost.
