Village Squire, 1980-05, Page 23Rosemary Radcliffe, who grew up on a farm outside the village of Kirkton, is one of the writers and stars of Spring Thaw, the newsy musical review that was a popular Canadian tradition for 20 years. Spring Thaw was first launched by Toronto's New Play Society in 1948. and stars like Robert Goulet and comedienne Barbara Hamilton started their careers in the revue, which poked gentle fun at Canadian politics and lifestyles. Now Spring Thaw has been reborn, and will travel across the country with its writers and cast, revising sketches and musicial pieces to keep in touch with its whereabouts at the time. As well as Rosemary Radcliffe, known to Canadian audiences for her roles in CBC shows Coming Up Rosie and The King of Kensington, the cast will star Toronto actress Mary Ann MacDonald and actors Marvin Karon and Patrick Young. Spring Thaw will be performed at the Guelph Spring Festival in May and will kick off the summer season at the Huron Country Playhouse, Grand Bend, on June 7. Writers who contributed to this year's Spring Thaw, in addition to the cast members, include Don Harron, Pierre Berton, Wayne and Shuster and Gordon Pinsent. Not all the skits are new - one popular one from the past shows that has been revived features the single athlete from Canada who is our team in the Olympics. The athlete not only finds it lonely in the relay race, but suffers the ignominy of coming in third in an event with only one other competitor. That's the kind of teasing Spring Thaw entertained Canadians with for 20 years. The Huron Country Playhouse in Grand Bend has appointed Heather Redick of Zurich to the position of Publicity Director. Making the announcement . General Manager Marc Quinn said he was very pleased to locate someone with her experience and enthusiasm. Mrs. Redick has over ten years business experience. For the latter five, she was closely associated with the graphic design and advertising industry, in the capacity of Production Manager, and more recently, Account Executive, with Agripress Canada Limited of Hensall. At Huron Country Playhouse Mrs. Redick will be responsible for all publicity and media/public relations for the entire programme presented by the theatre. The recently announced 1980 season includes four popular comedies, a large scale musical production, a film series, childrens programmes, and other major events. 1 GIFTS THAT SAY HAPPY Choose a nice card from our large selection.
