UP FRONT
This month Village Squire focusses on theatre in Western
Ontario.
We've got a lively story on three new artistic directors in the
area by a man who closely follows the local theatre scene,
London's James Reaney Jr.
And this time of year the area's largest theatre, the Stratford
Festival, is gearing up for another successful season. Freelancer
Susanne Jones looks backstage at Stratford as preparations are
underway for the 15 plays that will be presented at the Festival's
various theatres this summer.
The Emporium, an unusual restored country store in New
Dundee, would make an interesting side trip if you are visiting
any one of the area's theatres this summer. A story on The
Emporium starts on page 6.
We've also got a historical piece by Stratford writer Thelma
Coleman on Muster Day. when May 24 meant military duty in
the Huron Tract.
Richard Knechtel is a Hanover musician who's gaining a
following for his two albums (one called Musician at Large is a
recent Greentree Music release) and through club dates around
Western Ontario. Alice Gibb talked to him recently about
composing and performing.
And beginning this month, Village Squire is pleased to
introduce two new columnists. Jim Hagarty's a reporter in Perth
County, and Yvonne Reynolds lives on a six acre farm with her
husband in Huron. Though they come from different directions,
both look at the world with gentle humour. We hope Village
Squire readers enjoy what they have to say.
Next month Village Squire looks at genealogy, our search for
roots.
