PASSENGER SHIP SET FOR GREAT
LAKES' RUN THIS SUMMER
Great Lakes history will be made this
summer when the first passenger sail ship,
appropriately named Challenge, will be
officially christened in Port Colborne May
11
The 76 -foot (23 metre) ship, now under
construction in the Kanter Yacht Co.
boatyard in Port Stanley, will be available
for adults or teenagers who want to
experience the thrill of week-long cruises
on Lake Erie. The cost for adults will be
$250, which includes a bunk, food and the
necessary sailing gear, and teenagers will
pay $210. The less adventurous can sign up
for an overnight excursion.
The company offering the passenger
service is Windjammer Sailing Ltd. of Port
Colborne, a company of four avid sailors
who hope they can make waves in the
holiday business.
The week-long cruises offer passengers
a chance to join the three-man crew in
operating the schooner. This means
learning about seamanship, the mechanics
of the schooner, the tricks of navigating on
the lakes, and how to handle the six white
dacron sails which will power the 45 -ton
vessel.
Alexander White, one of the four men
involved in the Windjammer Company,
which owns Challenge, said he and his
partners felt there was a need for a return
to nature which you get from sailing...
"sort of the teamwork, the camaraderie of
working together to guide a ship not
against nature, but with it."
Mr. White said 200 people have already
signed up for the first cruises of the
summer.
The Windjammer company has also
started negotiations to operate Challenge
in the Caribbean during the winter.
The man who made the ship - Manfred
Kanter of Port Stanley, is himself a sailing
buff who spent three years sailing to ports
around the world with his wife and two
young sons.
The contract to build the Challenge has
been his largest order as a shipbuilder.
When Pauline McGibbon breaks the
bottle of champagne over the Challenge
hull on May 11, Lake Erie will be greeting a
ship of that name for the second time.
The first clipper schooner to be built on
the Great Lakes in 1852, christened near
Cleveland, Ohio, was also named
Challenge.
The owners hope that will be a good
omen for the success of their venture.
