This month Village Squire has a bit of a historical slant.
We've got two stories about the recycling of old buildings. The
first, the glorious old stone Opera Hall in St. Marys, is an early
example. About 1920 the huge public hall was converted into a
flour mill and it had a useful career in that capacity until the early
seventies. Now the building's new owners and some pre-
servation minded individuals are making a case for the Opera
Hall's eventual restoration.
Another old building, this time on Seaforth's Main St., is
home to The Tree Trunk, a used and antique furniture business
recently opened by a local couple. It's in the former Crich's
Bakery, a landmark in the town for the 75 years it was in the
Crich family. You can still see a few of the bakery's original
furnishings in the "new" store.
Even our short story, this month by Blyth area writer Adrian
Vos, has a historical slant. And we've looked at a new book, a
collection of period news clippings, issued on the 100th
anniversary of the Death of the Donnellys.
As reassurance that spring isn't far away we visited a small
farm ers' market that operates even in winter. And for a
welcome late -winter - doldrums chuckle, read The Midas Touch
in Reverse by Yvonne Reynolds, whose Salute to Winter
delighted readers in last month's issue.
Next month Village Squire will have stories on food and good
health and we'll look at the stunning revitalization of Exeter's
Main Street.
