at The Barn
There are benefits and detractions to a
smorgasbord style of dining room.
If you're extremely fussy about your food
you're likely not enchanted with smorgas-
bord because it can lose something while it
sits under warming lights waiting for you.
If you like an extremely formal dining
event with plenty of waiters to pamper you
you're also likely to be disappointed.
But the majority of people aren't that
exacting in their demands of a dinner out
and so places like The Barn Steakhouse in
northeast London continue to grow in
popularity. The Barn is a good example of
the kind of spot that offers a wide variety of
food for people to sample and a simple,
relaxed dining experience. At such
smorgasbord diningrooms you can set your
mit pace. lingering over dishes or between
dishes as you wish. or eating quickly to
meet a deadline at a theatre or show.
The Barn. located at Huron and
Highbury, is a spacious comfortable
diningroom with tables for two through
about 22. The evening we were there the
main business seemed to be with large
groups. perhaps office parties in the
pre -Christmas period.
The Barn is one of those places where
you don't notice that much about the decor
because the lights are so dim, something
that may not be enjoyed by some diners.
The chairs, however, are among the most
comfortable we've come across in our trips
throughout Western Ontario with the one
handicap being you sink down so far in
them that it's a long way up to the table.
The salad bar offered a wide variety of
salad makings such as lettuce. potato,
macaroni and bean salads. pickles,
cucumber slices, tomato slices in sauce.
cold meats, to barely scratch the surface.
Like so many such places a delightful meal
could be enjoyed just from the salad bar.
Back to the hot food counter there was a
selection of roast beef, spareribs. veal
cutlet, chicken and fish. In the vegetable
section there were oven browned potatoes.
mashed potatoes. rice. and carrots and
peas. The beef was tender enough to be cut
with a fork and all the other meats were
quite tasty in their various sauces. The
vegetables lacked something with their
sitting under the warming lights and the
gravy splashed over the beef was
unnecessary and almost certainly one of
these prepared gravy mixes.
The dessert table provided something
both for the person who lives to be tempted
and those who can resist the temptation of
supersweet. There were cream pies and
ambrosia fruit salads that looked so rich
you should run around the block when
finished a serving. For those with a guilty
conscience there were other preserved
fruits and jellies.
Service is a hard thing to judge at a
smorgasbord restaurant since the waitress
doesn't have to worry about getting your
order right or delivering it on time but we
found the service at the Barn very good.
Our waitress was polite. very friendly and
informal and very prompt, whisking away
dirty plates as soon as we were finished
them. The woman behind the serving
counter was also very friendly.
In all it was a comfortable. relaxing
evening. The bill for two with tax carne to
$17.
