Bear Trail Inn at Whitney, Ontario is just
outside the boundary of Ontario's giant
Algonquin Park. The Inn is typical of the
resort accommodation now catering to the
expanding army of cross-country or trail
skiers in Canada today.
The magic formula is a variety of
accommodation such as cottage or cabin
units for families, motel style units or
rooms in the lodge for ski club groups or
couples sharing, a pleasant dining room
serving good food, a licensed lounge with a
moodsetting fireplace, all readily access-
ible to a vast tract of semi -wilderness
terrain for the network of trails. Bear Trail
Inn qualified on all counts.
The North Bay Area Cross -Country Ski
Agency will mark its second year of
operation by offering a new Friday to
Sunday night ski package this winter.
Accommodation for two nights, two
breakfasts, one dinner. two days skiing.
transportation to and from the ski trails will
range between $54.40 to $73 (double
occupancy) depending on choice of
accommodation.
The package will encourage skiers to
take Ontario Northland Railway's North -
lander train out of Toronto around 2:30
p.m. Friday afternoon and they will be met
at the station and transported to choice of
accommodation. Train fare is approximate-
ly $30 return. There are a total of 13 inns,
hotels, motels and ski camps listed with the
Cross Country Ski Agency and all are ski
package participants. There are three
separate ski centres with interconnected
trail systems in the North Bay Area
association.
The Phelps Community Centre just off
Highway 63 is connected by the Songis
Road Trail to Camp Conewango about 16
km (10 miles) away. If you're a real long
distance glider you can continue on for
another 30 km (19 miles) on the Old Booth
Road trail to L'Auberge Des Pionniers
overlooking the beautiful Mattawa River.
The trails at Camp Conewango are
machine -groomed and climb and descend
forested ridges and traverse pleasant little
valleys with mixed stands of birch, maples
and evergreens which provide protection
from cold winter winds. All centres have
complete snack bar facilities and sundry
ski equipment for repairs and rentals.
Auberge Des Pionniers is a year round
outdoor centre set on a scenic vantage
point overlooking the Mattawa River. A
fully licensed lounge adds flair to the main
lodge and it also features live entertain-
ment and dancing on the weekends for ski
week guests and local clientele.

The Auberge Des Pionniers is an aptly
named rustic retreat located on the very
shores of the river where the fur -trading
voyageurs paddled their giant bark canoes
westward to Lake Superior. The long
downhill run on the Champlain Trail to the
river ice of the Mattawa River will have you
recalling the experience as a real highlight
of the day. Plans for a new 40 unit motel at
Auberge Des Pionniers during the summer
of 1980 will increase the capacity for
trail -head accommodation to the point
where it will be regarded as one of the
finest cross-country ski centres in northern
Ontario.
Ten-day courses featuring winter travel
on skis are scheduled in early February by
Headwater, Box 288P, Temagami, Ontario.
This unique outdoor educational centre
operates year round and the ski tourers
overnight in cabins, 16 km to 24 km (10 to
15 miles) apart ending up back at the main
lodge at the end of the course. The
Headwaters base camp is accessible via
Lakeland Air Services but of Temagami.
It's only a 20 minute flight and you're in
beautiful wilderness country.
