After eight prosecut)cn witnesses
were beard before Magistrate J. A.
Making on Thursday last, on a charge
of theft preferred agalret Dan Ran-
kin, of Forest, by William Down, of
Mum— Stephen township, the case was ad-
journed a week. Prosecution evi-
dence lasted nearly three urs,--- -
Rankin is charged( with stealing a
tractor and a plow, the charge being
laid after be had retlostwed the said
articles in the spring of this year,
claiming that Mr. Down bad defaulted
in making payments.
It was revealed Down had made a
down payment of $100 and signed
three notes when be purchased the
tractor and plow in 1934. Two notes
of $15C each were paid In 1934 and
193.5, and the final note was for 1300.
The plaintiff claims the note, when
signed, was dated 1 May 37, but the
date of the note put lu as an exhibit
was 1 Mai, 1936.
"$ you say Mr. Rankin deliber-
ately and without your consent
changed that 'T to a -6'7" asked W.
L. Millman, of Sarnia, counsel for the
defence.
"It's been changed," ta;d the plain-
tiff.
The right of Mr. Raukin to setae
both tractor and plow was questioned
by the prosecution, for a:I three notes
were marked "on tractcr." Down
testified the down payment way to
purchase the plow outright.
"The whole till eems
e ig sa direct
effort on the part of this man (Ran-
kin) to take back articles after a
goodly amount had been paid on them,
to keep them and then resell the ma-
chinery," said Crown Attorney Holmes.
"It is gene true the lien notes were
given for the tractor *Lie," said Ills
Worship, "and we have the receipt for
3100 paid on the pleb I think we
had better go on with thb defence."
Rankin took the stats i and was tell-
ing the amounts and daisy of the notes
when His Worship caLed a halt ow-
ing to the late hour and adjourned the
hearing a week.
Edwin Whitley, Ashfield township
youth who had pleaded not guilty to
a charge of attempting to steal gas
and elected trial by a judge and jury,t
was saved from a jail term by a cross-
cut saw when he reversed Ms plea
and election to summary trial by the
Magistrate on a plea of guilty.
"He has an ata -winter job with his
father cutting wood," said counsel for
the youth. "It U a two -men job and
if the boy g to jail his father will
have to find someone else or lose the
job."
Magistrate Making asseraed Whitley
$23 and coots and suspended his driv-
er's permit for six mnths.
A new one was revealed to the
court when Chief of Pr lee Fremlin,
of ('u nton,'produced a yontb, Wm. Mc-
Clinchey, charged with throwing or
allowing to be thrown an empty beer
bottle from his ear and knowingly
leaving broken glass on highway No.

was $5 and costs.

Increase in total assets to above the
3800,000,000 mark and liquid assets to
more than $600,000,000. Deposits con
tinu-
e to increase at a reassuring rate,
and now exceed 3090,000.000.
In keeping with the general trend
during the catty months of the year,
current loans record a reduction, and
this has tended to Increase the bank's
holdings of high-grade Government se-
curities.
From accumulated profits an amount wasof $1,000,000 added to the rest
account, bringing tt up to $30,000,000,
against the capital of $30,000,000.
111quW fealties
Every part of the statement reflects
the strength of the institution's posi-
tion. Assets stand at $805,Uh1,tllti,
compared with $792,772,872 a year ago.
Of this amount, total liquid assets
are $006,472,587, equal to 113.27 per
cent. of all liabilities to the public.
The unusually high percentage of 11-
quid assets la likely due to the les-
sened demand' for current accommoda-
tion and the necessity aplacing a
greater amount in higr-grade govern-
ment bonds. As a remit, the total
holding. of government and other In

to $.4.1'2,781,097, from $361,780,848. The
greater portion of these hoiding,' con-
sists of gilt -edge securities, which ma-
ture at early dates.
At the same time, Increases are re -
ported in call loans both at home and
abroad. Call Mans outside of Can-
ada stand at $35,400,160, as compared
with $18,835,236, while call loans in
Canada total $8,169,988, a gain from
Dr. Whitely Honored by Council +4,423,736.
A further indication of the -strength
of liquid assets is afforded by cash
holdings and deposits in the Bent of
Canada of 379,212079; notes of and
cheques on other banks $29,222,231 and
deposits with other banks 300,264,801,
bringing the available cash holding*
well above $125,000,000.
While general business throughout
the country, particularly In the latter
months of the year, has reported sub-
stantial increased, It is evident that
many of the larger companies are
availing themselves of their liquid re-
s•urce• to take care of auy new bust -
Deas secured. As a result, current
loans have declined •ad ere reported
at $174,141,011, down from $234,401,311.
This situation probably also indicates
the readiness with which former loans
have been liquidated.
['refit and Ives Account
Reflecting the improv.•ment In con-
ditions, profits stowed a tendency to
gain, as compared with the previous
year. The total profit* for the year
after making appropriations to contin-
gent re"erve fund, out -of which fund
provision for bad and doubtful debts
had been made, were $3,181,501, as
compared with $3,005,212. The pro-
fits were stinal to 4.18 per cent. on the
