on Junior
Farmers' tour
Members of the Junior Farmers
Association of Ontario and other interested
young farmers recently went on a livestock
management tour of operations in Victoria,
Peterborough, Hastings, Prince Edward,
Northumberland and Lennox and Adding-
ton Counties.
One of these attending the tour was
Brian Anderson of R.R.2, Tavistock in
Perth County. Brian works on a 500 acre
farm with his father and a hired man. They
have 80 dairy cows and 300 feeder pigs.
The tour was held from November 4 to
November 9 and Brian said that on
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, they
visited 18 farms, touring dairy, beef, swine
and sheep operations and they also did a
bit of practice judging. He said they were
just looking at the managementoperations
of these types of farms.
On Thursday they went to Toronto where
they had a livestock evaluation competition
at the Royal Winter Fair.
Brian said that in the evenings they
would hold sessions discussing manage-
ment and do an evaluation of what they had
seen that day.
He described the experience as very
educational and really worth while. He said
he was mainly interested in the dairy end
of it.
They were able to see different
feeding, housing and manure handling
systems.
"There were a lot of different ways to do
these things," Brian said.
He said almost without exception, all,the
farmers were interested and involved with
community activities.
Asked whether what he saw could help
in his own operation, he said there were
different types of dairy housing facilities
that he did see and there were a couple of
things he could consider. He also said that
they have a new manure handling system
at thrir farm and he saw one of the

He pointed out that the farms they
toured were not show places, that some of
them were just getting started, but they
were successful farmers.
"I think they were trying to show a
practical way of getting involved in farming"
he said of the tour.
He said he was very enthused about the
trip and he would like to have seen more
people from Perth on it because he said,
"its very worthwhile."
