The Rural Voice, 1979-10, Page 4Letters to the Editor Farmers should reduce protein intake Thanks for Heart Disease and The Rural Farmer (Opinionated - Adrian Vos). It's a good article - carefully researched. The only two criticisms I would have are: 1. You omit the idea that Canadians in general and farmers in particular would be healthier if they reduced their protein intake. Epidemological studies comparing heart disease in rich and poor countries indicate this. Also, even if the high protein diet isn't harmful it is unnecessary and an extravagent use of the world's grain supply. Any dumb hog farmer knows that mature animals not growing don't need a high protein diet. Also, we must cut down on the high protein foods to have room for the B 6 vegetables. 2. Also, I don't agree with your saying walking briskly is as good an exercise as jogging. To do any good cardiovascularly, the exercise must stress the heart - get the pulse up 50 per cent or so from at rest for at least three half hour periods a week. One would really have to walk briskly. I realize the dangers of jogging, having gone lame several time myself. But by stressing myself severely jogging, I am prepared for the times when I must struggle with a stubborn sow or pigs that won't load easily. I feel the exercise periods must be strenuous somehow - if not jogging, then bicycling and skiing or rowing apparently is a good one. I have roller skates for hard surfaced roads - I thought that might be easier on my old joints. Also, the walking would take more time. I really like your paper - it deserves wider circulation in Ontario. Yours truly, Syd Smith, R.R. 3, Teeswater, Ont. Letters to the editor are welcome!
