OFA Directors Meeting
August 22 Toronto
BY JIM McINTOSH
The Huron County resolution asking that OFA demand an
explanation from the Federal Minister of Agriculture, and
request the practice of lending to non-resident interests by the
Farm Credit Corporation be stopped. was passed almost
unanimously by all the OFA directors. Huron County Federation
of Agriculture had been told that some noi.-resident purchasers
of farm land were having the existing FCC mortgages transferred
and then not making any payments for up to three years.
Wilfred Ntomiah of Ghana sponsored by the OFA Agri -Skills
Abroad Committee spoke to the meeting and described some of
the farming practices in his )untry. 'Wilfred has been visiting
Ontario farms to gain technical knowledge which he could apply
in his own country. He can see a future for corn and the raising
of poultry in his native Ghana.
The Canadian Federation of Agriculture semi-annual meeting
held at Oakville high -lighted reports from the various
commodity groups. The OFA has developed a working paper on
the values of quotas which will be finalized and ready for
discussion at the Annual Meeting in early 1980. The OFA is quite
concerned that the Export Development Agency for Agricultural
Products as established and initially funded by the Liberal
Government be continued and expanded by the present
Conservative Government.
The Ontario Federation of Agricultur 's extended health
services coverage which is available to all members has been
purchased by only 1,566 members to date. A first two-year
enrollment total of 10,000 was expected when the plan was
offered. The plan costs $45.00 for a family and covers semi
private hospital care, private duty nursing care, drugs ($50
annual deductible), physiotherapy, dental (as a result of
accidental damage), rental and purchase of crutches, etc.,
ambulance service (maximum $25 per trip) psychologist and
speech therapist.
The Ontario Vegetable Growers Marketing Board's chairman
Harry Dougall of Huron County was present at the Directors'
Meeting and presented the Vegetable Growers' case for their
request to the Ontario Government for the granting of agency
powers with the authority to set prices and terms and conditions
of sale. The OFA directors gave their support to the Vegetable
Growers and will support their request to the Ontario
Government.
A resolution from Oxford County was supported by the
Directors asking both the Provincial and Federal Governments to
exempt from the sales tax all building materials used in
rebuilding facilities damaged or destroyed by the recent storm
which ravaged Oxford, Brant, Norfolk and Haldimand Counties.
Huron farmers
assist tornado victims
Four days after the tornado struck the Woodstock Area, the
Huron County Federation of Agriculture had organized a
co-ordinating office to send Huron County volunteers to assist in
the clean-up.
Adrian Vos answered the telephone at the Federation Office
in Vanastra and directed callers who wished to help. Over 200
volunteers travelled to the stricken area, many taking their own
saws and tools to clear the debris. $2,500 in donations has been
received to date by the Huron County Federation of Agriculture
Tornado Relief Fund.
The hard work of cleaning up the destroyed barns and houses
has been accomplished by the overwhelming response of the
many volunteers from Huron and other Counties.
The need in the coming weeks in the tornado -stricken area is
for carpenters to help rebuild barns and houses. Feed for
animals is also needed. For further information call the
Federation office on Mondays and Fridays (482-9642).
Donations may be sent to Huron County Federation of
Agriculture Tornado Relief Fund, Box 429, Clinton, Ont.
