The Rural Voice, 1979-09, Page 16The teevesaid under the development controls now in effect, a farmer can still sever rough land from his farm. and can get an acre off the farm to build a retirement home. However, the cattleman believes if the government is going to put land under development control, and the owner wants to sell his land, then the government "should buy it (the land) at market value." Doug Hayes said he doesn't feel the controls are necessarily a bad thing if they can keep control. of agricultural land. He said people are against development controls on their land, but the same people often complain there are too many tourists and too much development now. The young farmer said many smaller lakes on the peninsula are already overcrowded with cottages. While Doug Hayes said he's heard complaints from farmers who have hikers crossing their land, he's also heard complaints about trespassers from farmers he knows in the London-Ilderton area. Mr. Hayes said when the bill was first announced, some of the planned controls were "so ridiculous, it put a scare into people." Those proposals included controls on springs and bush areas which would have interfered with the operation of pasture farms. Howard Crow, who admits he wrote to the government about the issue of controls, has also heard stories about hikers who "make quite a mess" of trails crossing farms. The cattleman hopes the NEC won't get any further development control over the area, but at the same time "we don't want a city up here." When you drive down some of the peninsula's back roads, lined with cedar trees, or catch the first breathtaking glimpse of the brilliant blue waters of Georgian Bay, and smell the bracing air or see the fields filled with healthy -looking beef cattle, then you can't blame anyone for wanting to keep the Bruce Peninsula and beef cattle. After all, it seems to be a winning partnership. Compare Our Prices on the new WOODS "Energy Saver" FREEZERS Standard 15 cu. ft. Standard 18 cu. ft.
