The Rural Voice, 1979-07, Page 30Perth elevator won't
be built this year
A S1 -million grain elevator and drying
facility planned by the Stratford District
Co-operative Inc., to be built on proper t y
at R.R. 4, Stratford, won't be built this
year.
The co-op president Stewart Anderson
said no decision has been made to begin
construction in 1980 either.
Also, the co-op is spending $200,000 to
upgrade its Erie Street plant in Stratford
which compresses feed into pellets for
cattle and hog feed.
The co-op members lobbied for a new
elevator after a bumper crop two years ago
in which members complained they had
long waits in line at drying stations in
Mitchell and St. Mary's.
Earlier this year, the proposal to build
the elevator was opposed by area home
owners but in April the Ontario Municipal
Board ruled in favor of the elevator
construction.
Now a combination of factors make the
construction uncertain. Mr. Anderson said
in the past year new elevators have popped
up across the province, making the need
for another facility questionable.
Bruce farmers protest escarpment commission
Protesters from the Bruce Penninsula
Protection Association and the Niagara
Escarpment Northern Ratepayers Associ-
ation recently symbolically buried the
Niagara Escarpment commission in Lake
Huron.
A black coffin labelled NEC and contain-
ing a copy of Bill 129 which set up the
commission to control land use along the
escarpment was dropped into the lake at
Tobermory following a mock funeral pro-
cession up Highway 6 from Wiarton.

More than 100 vehicles took part in the
protest, many carrying signs which read
"Beware, Cross Farmer" or "Rescind the
NEC."
Al Clark of Wiarton, an executive member
of the Bruce association and protest leader
asked demonstrators to post No Trespassing
signs on all their lands to show opposition to
the provincial government. The protesters
want planning about the escarpment left in
the hands of local residents and not dictated
by the provincial government.
