Where are
the men of vision?
When you read this column, the election will be over, and
we will know if the big, bad Trudeau still has the reins of the
country in hand, or if talking -doll Clark got a chance to do the
steering. Or have we got socialism -by -the -back -door with a
minority government and Broadbent saying, "Hee" or "Haw"
from the back of the carriage.
I don't think it will make much difference. There don't seem to
be men of vision at the top. Men like John A MacDonald, who saw
as his vision a country from sea to sea. Men like John
Diefenbaker, who had at least a vision of drawing the North into
Canada. Men like Lester Pearson, who wanted Canada to take its
rightful place among the nations of the world, and severed the
apron string from Britain when his government differed with
them on Suez.
What is Clark's vision? Just to form the government? To give
even more power to the provinces so the loosest federation in the
world can become even looser?
What is Trudeau's vision? Bringing the constitution to
Canada, and then give the provinces more power?
What is Broadbent's vision? To become a country governed by
labor unions, like Britain?
We need a leader for the country who has the vision of giving
Canadians enough pride in their own achievements that the silly
search for a Canadian identity is stopped forever.
We need a leader who will make us proud not only of the
achievements of the English speaking part of Canada, but of the
achievements of our French speaking compatriots.
We need a leader who will make us proud of our Indian
compatriots. Who will make us, in the central area, proud of the
Maritimes and of the West. Who will make us proud of Alberta's
oil wealth and the manner in which Albertons preserve the
money trom it. Proud of the way that Saskatchewan manages its
pot -ash mines. Proud of the rugged Newfoundlander, who will
draw himself up out poverty and unemployment if given half a
chance.
We need a leader who will make us proud of Canada's
technical achievements; who will have Canadians scramble to
invest in their own country instead of elsewhere.
We need a lot more leader than we are likely to get.
Where are you, Canadian Bismarck, or Lincoln, or William of
Orange? Why are you hiding? There must be one like you
somewhere in Canada.
