student who lives on a beef farm.
He helps out at home by feeding the
steers and heifers and helps put the cows
out to grass.
Scott says that sometimes his father
warns him about farm safety in such things
as putting the fork up against the wall so he
doesn't jab himself.
You can go back
in the bush
Scott would like to be a beef farmer. He
enjoys the farm life because, "there's no
pollution and you can go back in the bush
and see if there's any birds or squirrels."
Sheila Dorsch is a 14 year old Grade 8
student who enjoys the farm life some-
times. One bad point about it is that you
have to get your work done before you do
your homework, she says, but she also
likes it because she likes the animals and
you can do anything you want after your
work is done.
Work fbr Sheila on the dairy farm
includes putting hay and straw down for
the cattle, feeding hay, corn and chop to
the cattle and cleaning the cow stalls out.
She also helps with haying and when
they're bringing the straw in from the
fields.
When she was younger she was warned
to stay away from farm machinery and not
to put her hands in machinery.
Mark Breckenridge lives on a hobby
farm right now but his desire of the
moment is to be a beef farmer.
The nine year old Grade 4 student enjoys
farm life because, "You got to be around
animals and you get to do whatever you
want to do."
On the hobby farm where Mark lives
there are some cattle and every year they
get about 100 chickens which they cull in
the fall and then sell.
Sometimes he gets warned about farm
safety and is told to watch for the holes
where they put down the straw and hay,
and to watch for the pitchfork and not jab
himself with it.
Oscar wants to be
a cash cropper
Oscar Van Den Assem is 11 years old
and lives on a hog farm but the Grade 5
student says his ambition is to be a cash
crop farmer.
He says he gets warned when his dad is
hauling manure. They have a big septic
tank and have to open up a hole that is

approximately 12 feet deep. He's warned
that he might fall in.
Oscar likes the farm because, "there's
more room to do stuff than in the city and
when you go to bed at night you don't hear
cars going up and down the road all the
time."
Wendy would like to be
a hobby farmer
Wendy Martin lives on a beef and pig
farm. When she gets older her ambition is
to be a hobby farmer and have all kinds of
animals, because she loves animals.
Now the 11 year old Grade 6 student
helps her dad clean out the pigs and when
little pigs are born she clips their teeth and
gives them medicine.
Wendy has been warned that when they
put silage up in the silo she's supposed to
stay away from augers and things and
when they put grain in the corn bins and
there's augers around that, she's supposed
to stay away then, too.
