The Rural Voice, 1979-06, Page 13John Morey ground level. John thought he might like to farm part-time but also have another job so he could bring in some money. For now though, John just likes living on a farm because of the fresh air and the good food he can get out of the garden. Right now John has his own business. He has an aquarium and he's going to try and sell fish. Debbie Riddell, a 12 year old Grade 6 student, lives on a dairy farm where she sometimes helps milk the cows and washes the milking parlor and the 1 a . and things out in the milkhouse. Although she's a little older and prob- ably knows about farm safety, when she was younger she was told to watch out for the big combines and things when they were harvesting. She's another one who doesn't get teased about living on a farm but she doesn't think she'll live on a farm when she gets older anyway. The city's too polluted She likes living on the farm now though because it's quiet and in the city, "it's real polluted and everything," she said. (She added that on the farm you have a lot more space to yourself.) Heidi Gerber is an 11 year old who lives on a hog farm where she helps out by watering the pigs or if they have to be changed around to go upstairs in the barn Debbie Riddell she helps then. Sometimes she also helps to put bales down. She never gets teased about living on the farm either but she has been warned about farm safety. She said if they're picking stones and she's driving the tractor, if someone's in the way she has to be careful not to run over him or her. "If we're riding on a wagon we have to sit down. We can't stand up, and when the tractors are out, not to get in the way," are some of the warnings she has had about farm safety. Heidi likes living on a farm sometimes but considers the life slow. Rather be where the action is "I'd rather be where all the action is," she said. David Shantz is an 11 year old who lives on a dairy farm. He helps out by pushing down hay and feeding it.
