ground level.
John thought he might like to farm
part-time but also have another job so he
could bring in some money.
For now though, John just likes living on
a farm because of the fresh air and the
good food he can get out of the garden.
Right now John has his own business.
He has an aquarium and he's going to try
and sell fish.
Debbie Riddell, a 12 year old Grade 6
student, lives on a dairy farm where she
sometimes helps milk the cows and
washes the milking parlor and the 1 a . and
things out in the milkhouse.
Although she's a little older and prob-
ably knows about farm safety, when she
was younger she was told to watch out for
the big combines and things when they
were harvesting.
She's another one who doesn't get
teased about living on a farm but she
doesn't think she'll live on a farm when she
gets older anyway.
The city's too polluted
She likes living on the farm now though
because it's quiet and in the city, "it's real
polluted and everything," she said. (She
added that on the farm you have a lot more
space to yourself.)
Heidi Gerber is an 11 year old who lives
on a hog farm where she helps out by
watering the pigs or if they have to be
changed around to go upstairs in the barn

she helps then. Sometimes she also helps
to put bales down.
She never gets teased about living on the
farm either but she has been warned about
farm safety. She said if they're picking
stones and she's driving the
tractor, if someone's in the way she has to
be careful not to run over him or her.
"If we're riding on a wagon we have to
sit down. We can't stand up, and when the
tractors are out, not to get in the way,"
are some of the warnings she has had
about farm safety.
Heidi likes living on a farm sometimes
but considers the life slow.
Rather be
where the action is
"I'd rather be where all the action is,"
she said.
David Shantz is an 11 year old who lives
on a dairy farm. He helps out by pushing
down hay and feeding it. If his' dad is away,
he helps his brother with the milking and
sometimes feeds the rabbits or the pigs.
