The Rural Voice, 1979-05, Page 53The Agricrew program is something that's brand new to
Huron. Bruce and Perth. The program was just brought in as a
pilot project in a few counties last year. Agricrew consists of five
people, one of whom acts as the foreman.
Farmers can hire agricrews for a maximum of five days
depending on what work has to be done around the farm.
Farmers pay the co-ordinators of the program $90 a day and the
government of Ontario will reimburse the farmers $15 per day.
Another new program is the Ontario Youth Employment
Program (OYEP) which is not just for farmers but for anybody
who could use student help in the summer. Students are between
the ages of 15-25 and the government subsidizes the employer
up to $1.25 an hour.
Mr. McGregor said there was no deadline for applications for
people wanting to get into the program. In the Agricrew program
successful applicants were to be notified by May 25 while for
farmers it will be an ongoing thing deciding when they need
people. He had just received two applications from people
wanting to work on an Agricrew and said if any other students
are interested he had Tots of applications.
Bruce County has the same three programs for students
wanting to work on farms. Helen Gutscher, secretary at the
Bruce OMAF office said they had about 20 or 25 applications for
the Agricrew program. She said there's not nearly as much
interest in the Junior Agriculturalist program as there is in
Agricrew.
But she did say that "these programs are usually pretty
successful."
In Perth County these programs are also offered but Jean
Elliott. secretary to Allan Scott. Perth's agricultural represent-
ative, said they didn't know how many students would have
applied for the programs as they can also get the forms at the
schools.
