The Rural Voice, 1979-04, Page 55Continued from P. 54 We are particularly concerned about plans which could affect Huron County. Eighty six persent of Huron County is classed as one, two or three agricultural land. In 1975 the total value of crops and livestock was one hundred and thirty five million dollars. It has been estimated that by the year 2,000 twelve million acres of agricultural land will be needed to feed Ontario's people. There is Tess agricultural land than this already. We are concerned about the impacts of large power projects in rural aras both because of the immediate and long term effects of associated pollutants and also because of the influx of temporary residents putting pressure on agricultural land. As a Federation we will resist strongly any effort to force a transmission line through Huron County. We take this stand because of the direct impacts which such a line would have on our agricultural community and also because we are opposed to the location of a power plant in this area and view a line through Huron County tempting this type of development. While we feel the time for an aggressive growth program is pasts we recognize that Ontario Hydro will need to complete some projects underway and that various com- ponents of the Hydro system will need to be replaced over the years. If Ontario Hydro works with concerned persons to determine acceptable sites, sensible routes and just compensation there will be much less conflict on these issues. We in the Federation of Agriculture are prepared to co-operate with other groups and in- dividuals to ensure that these criteria are used for any future Hydro projects in this or other areas of Ontario.
