Bruce County
Folk Singers
BY GISELE IREL AND
They have rhythm and a tremendous
talent for making music.
The Bruce County
Folk Singers. These young men have
placed first the second year at he Lindsay
"Swing and Sing" competition. All the
Junior Farmers, they have a varied and
long expereince in the music field. Their
instrumental and vocal talents vary but put
together they are a dynamite combination.
The oldest of the group, Byron Ballagh,
is a full time hog farmer in Teeswater and
could almost be termed a one man band.
He plays a wide variety of instruments.
Singing with the Mount Forest Barber
Shop Society is one of his interests along
with playing in the Teeswater Highland
Band.
His brother Gary, also a member of the
group, is single. He farms in partnership
with his father, Wallace Ballagh and Byron
and they run an impressive hog enterprise.
Gary also has had lots of experie nee in the
music field and plays several instruments.
He is a member of the Mount Forest
Barber Shop Society, and plays in the
Teeswater Highlander Band.'
Ben Blackwell, another member. spends
a great deal of time in the ball park and is
a carded umpire. He is a licensed plumber
and by all accounts a good goal tender for
the Teeswater Intermediate Hockey team.
He is also a member of the Mount Forest
Barber Shop Society.
Next comes, Ken Wall who is a dairy
farmer and broomball enthusiast. His
musical expereience is also wide and
varied and he plays in the Drumlin Band.
Ken really likes sports and is a broomball
player of note. His friends find him a
perfectionist. Ken is a Junior Farmer and
formerly of the singing group the "Good
Intentions".
Last, but certainly not least, is the
tremendous talent of Frank Leahy. His
violin and fiddle playing alone have won
him wide acclaim; he has had the most
formal music training of the group. His
prowess on the violin in classical and fiddle
in country music is outstanding. Frank is the
youngest member of the group and on the
quiet side.
He plays centre on the Juvenile Hockey
Team and shows as much enthusiasm there
as he does for his music Frank seems to be
the icing on this talented group's cake.
