Too early to tell if new Canfarm will work
Canfarm, the federally financed record
keeping service is back in business, run by
a co-operative of farm groups, but there
have been some changes.
Now, the basic fee is $135. According to
Allan Scott, Perth County agricultural
representative that "gives you a farm
operating statment, a bank account report
as well as list back of all your entries and as
many runs as you need to get a finalized
annual report."
Farmers can also get a beginning
inventory balance. "I guess the main point
will be that for each report, the first five
additional reports are $20 each and
anything after that is $10," he said.
Additional reports include things like a
net worth statement, a cash flow state-
ment, a credit account report, a deprecia-
tion schedule, an income and expense
statement for tax purposes and enterprise
reports.
A person ran request reports at anY rime
during the year if needed or reports to start
the next year.
"At present we're starting to convert
people who have been on the system," Mr.
Scott said.
The new Canfarm system is called
Version 3. "We're starting out, helping
people decide what reports they want,
getting them transferred to Version 3.
"Actually we haven't been looking for
new people this year, because there's been
a lot to changeover," Mr. Scott said.
About a year ago, Perth had around 80
people that belonged to the organization,
but Mr. Scott says he suspects that the
figure has been reduced considerably.
He said he's had comments ranging
from one man who said with the program
he got his report's for half the cost he could
get them done anywhere else to other
people who said the costs have gone up too
quickly.
The increased fees and the change -over
to the new system are what have caused
some people to drop out, he believes.

As for Canfarm's future, he thinks it's
too early to say. "I don't think it's possible
really to say now. The people are just
getting it going. It's really too soon.
They've just taken over the system."
"I think it's sort of a year of consolidation.
That's just my personal opinion," he said.
Their farm management information
program is a big thing. It can give farmers
information on such things as cost and
returns per sows kept determining costs to
produce beef and determining the cost of
many other products as well.
