The Rural Voice, 1979-04, Page 13HEY, THIS IS FUN! — Allen Hillis of Blyth finds being a substitute mother can be fun as he teaches this spring Iamb how to use a bottle. Murphy's Law tailor made for farming Anything that can go wrong will BY GISELE IRELAND Murphy's Law stating that anything that can possibly go wrong --will, was tailor- made for farming, especially spring planting. If you are realistic you will disregard the pretty little speeches about little seeds emerging through the rich soil and will consider very pricey seed in dirt heavily loaded with material from the barnyard. The aroma is lingering and Mr.Clean can't do anything for those hands. Cost is another factor. You haven't got the cash. With misgivings you approach your friendly banker and walk away paying 14% interest. Your spring planting success will depend heavily on the fact that perhaps this year there will be no late frost. You pay a lot and pray a lot. You get to the point where you seriously consider growing daisies as they seem to thrive with little care and cows love'em. The earth lovers can't wait to see the little rows of seeds coming out. I frantically chekc the rows to see how many misses I have made. If 1 don't spot them someone is sure to point them out to me. The parts for the machinery is a story in itself. If you are just about done --you will break down. If it looks like rain --you will break down. The part that is broken will surely be back ordered or the company on strike or on holiday. You can bank on bruised knuckles and short tempers before the job is done. The part that cost you an arm and a leg will usually fit in a tea cup and the cheapest one will give you a hernia lifting it to the truck. Well, planting's done. You hope your wife won't be niad forever because that new sofa went into planter parts. If it rains at the right time and if. . .and if. . .and if. Why do we do this every year? Because we're farmers and we enjoy it. Why do we do this every year? Okay, fella, where's the milk? THE RURAL VOICE/APRIL 1979 PG. 11
