NEWS FROM THE ONTARIO PORK
PRODUCERS' MARKETING BOARD
BY: R.JERRY BI,lItaM,
EXECUTIVE SECRETARY
The Ontario Pork Producers' Marketing
Plan is firmly based on forty-two County
ssociations. The 250 councilmen from these
Associations. who arc the voting delegates
at annual meetings, are also expected to
supply a constant input from their local
organizations by resolutions and suggest-
ions so that thc Board can establish policy
according to the wishes of the producer.
The County Associations have other •
duties as well. These groups should
provide the opportunity for individual
producers to "have his say". They should
disctiss policy. distribute information and
do local promotion. By participating in
County Association meetings. the producer
can gain valuable experience which can
contribute to his advancement.
The Communications Comnnittcc of the
O.P.P.M.B. has the responsibility of
''educating" county directors: in fact. up
until a few years ago. it was called thc
Education Committee.
To carry out their function in this regard.
the Committee arranged two training
seminars: one in the Eastern Zone at
Smith's Falls on November 6-7 and one in
the Central Zone at Aurora on November
20-21. At these sessions. Mr. Vic Morrow
of the Rural Learning Association and Mr.
Ed Since, a personal development consult-
ant. conducted qday -long program des-
igned to give councilmen some basic
training in running meetings, participating
in effective discussions, observing rules of
procedure and establishing better com-
munications.
These training seminars were also
designed to inform county directors about
the history and development of the Board.
its operations and its organization so that
they, in turn, can inform and be of service
to other producers. Also by improving the
talents and capablilities of those people.
the committee hopes that the County
Executives can become more effective
and will be better able to elect represent-
atives who are well informed, progressive
and resolute - or perhaps become Board
Directors themselves!
