50 acre severances
in Bruce may mean
more hobby farms
Hobby farming may become more
prevalent in Bruce County south after a
recent decision by their planning board.
The board has agreed to allow land
severances of 50 acres instead of 100 acres,
the practice in the past.
Mac Campbell, the county planning
director, said the board made the decision
because they felt farmers starting out could
afford 50 acres, but maybe not 100 acres.
The average size of a farm in the county
is 200 acres and Mr. Campbell said it may
not be possible to have a viable farming
operation on 50 acres of land.
Also. the 50 acre policy is expected to
encourage hobby farmers, who often don't
use farm land to its full potential.
Mr. Campbell said he thinks there are
times when 50 acres provides for a viable
farm operation, especially for highly
intensified farming which doesn't require
as much land as cash crops. The director
added the board may also want to divide
Iandof poor agricultural quality into 50 -acre
Tots.

butter wrappers
blamed for dairy decline
See-through butter wrappers were criti-

dairy industry by Gilles Choquette of
Ottawa, chairman of the Canadian Dairy
Commission. Choquette speaking at the
bIst annual meeting of the Nation I Dairy
Council at the Harbor Castle Inn inoronto
said that store lights send. ultra -violet rays
through these wrappers and oxidize the
butter, making it taste rancid.
And Choquette said any consumer who
buys butter, at today's prices. that is not of
top quality is likely to switch to margarine
the next week.
"You are killing the dairy industry," he
said.
Choquette said the industry must halt
the decline of butter sales if it hopes to
salvage its future. He said a survey showed
that half of the retail stores carry some
rancid butter on their shelves.
