Feds call tenders
on CANFARM takeover
The federal department of agriculture is
calling for tenders from groups interested
in taking over Canfarm, the national farm
accounting service.
Earlier this summer, Ottawa announced
it was dropping out of the program as part
of its' government spending cutbacks. The
federal government will save $5.5 million
by dropping out of Canfarm.
A number of other farm groups have
acpressed an interest in taking over the
operation of Canfarm.
Both the National Farmer's Union and
the Canadian Federation of Agriculture
have indicated they may make a bid on the
service, which will have its federal
subsidies cut off early next year.
A number of banks and computer
consulting firms have also indicated an
interest in taking over the Canfarm service.
The federal government plans to an-
nounce Canfarm's fate by Dec. 1. Letters
will then be sent to the 24,000 farmer -users
to say its service will continue after
federal support ends March 31, 1979.
The National Farmers Union has also
expressed concern over federal intentions
to sell inland grain terminals in the
province at Prescott, Goderich, Colling-
wood and Owen Sound.
The NFU fears the elevators will be
bought up by multinational corporations
which may not have the interests of the
country at heart.
