The Rural Voice, 1978-11, Page 8program on a smaller scale are Clinton area farmers Glen and
Dan Nott.
The brothers were introduced to Norman Alexander and his
ideas for using rip -rap at the end of spillways when he visited
their farms in his work as drainage commissioner.
Don Nott said putting in rip -raps at the end of title drains or
spillways isn't any problem if the farmer has field stone on his
property - the only thing is that it's a bit time consuming and
requires some manual labor.
Change in Attitude
Many of the erosion control techniques farmers can implement
are relatively inexpensive, although they may requires a change
in attitudes to land use practices and cropping habits. The
danger is that if erosion controls are ignored for too long. then a
major restructuring of the land is required which can result in a
major expenditure.
Hopefully, erosion control practices can be implemented
voluntarily, with a minimum of regulation and a maximum use of
public education programs, If not, then the day may come when
there are legislated rules governing what crops are grown where
and what land must be left grassed over.
As Dr. Tom Lane warned, "There may even be areas of the
province where farmers won't be allowed to do what they've
been doing."
In the meantime, Norman Alexander is going to keep on with
his campaign to alert the public to the dangers of erosion.
Mr. Alexander is particularly concerned about attitudes to
erosion among the farming community. He is concerned that
while farmers and farm organizations become excited about
issues such as hydro lines intersecting their property, they don't
worry when something as major as erosion is robbing them of
valuable land.
"When you lose farmland to have a factory built, at least put
something there that will produce. But when you lose land to
erosion you have nothing for it."
