reports that up till July 1st/78 the total
number of hogs in Eastern Canada was up
18% above a year ago. In Western Canada
the numbers were up only 4%. This has
been a much greater increase than was
previously expected.
For the balance of 1978, Canadian
producers report plans to farrow 16% more
sows than a year earlier. In the U.S., pork
output is expected to increase 2-4% during
the second half of 1978, and prices in the
U.S. later this year, are expected to hold
near the summer average.
To date this year, the number of
Canadian hogs slaughtered is nearly 9%
above a year ago, whereas in the U.S.
output is up less than 1%.
Forage conference
limited to 500
Farmers can learn how to make the most
of their forage crops at the Ontario forage
Conference. December 13 and 14, in
Toronto.
This provincial conference will provide a
blend of research facts and practical
information, says Harvey Wright, confer-
ency publicity chairman.
More than 60 speakers will be featured.
including many of Ontprio's top forage
farmers. Twenty forage specialists. from
the University of Guelph and the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food, will
present forage information. Several
specialists from the United States will also
make presentations.
"The program is divided into general
sessions about growing forages, and
specific sessions dealing with the use of
forages in various types of farming
operations," says Mr. Wright.
Special sessions will be directed to dairy.
sheep, hog, cow -calf, stocker, and feedlot
operators. Another program will explore
the marketing of hay as a cash crop.
To complement the conference program,
there will be an exhibit area of commercial
and educational displays. A spouse's
program will include a guided tour of
Toronto, a fashion show, a cooking
demonstration, and a shopping trip.
The conference is sponsored by the
Ontario Soil and Crop Improvement Associ-
ation, the Ontario Minstry of Agriculture
'and Food. and the University of Guelph.
"Only 500 applicants can be accepted for
the conference," says Mr. Wright. "Inter-
ested people must register before
November 10."
Conference registration forms are avail-
able at local offices of the Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food.
