Brian Ireland, the president of the Bruce
Federation of Agriculture had the misfort-
une of a serious barn fire. Damage was
estimated at $125,000, destroying a barn
and 180 pigs, late Wednesday, August 9.
Gisele Ireland said the fire broke out
about 11 p.m. and there was little the
Teeswater fire department could do.
"We had just gone to bed, and I heard
this crackling sound. The flames had
already gone through the roof," she said.
"We lost pretty well the whole barn.
There's only the milk shed left."
45 dairy cows of the registered Jersey
herd were removed safely from the burning
building.
Fire officials have not yet determined the
cause of the. blaze, but combustion of hay
recently put in the barn is not suspected.
Bruce Federation members, unable to
attend the benefit dance in Teeswater can
send donations, if they wish, through the
Federation office in Hanover.
Bruce Canvas Successful
On July 18 and 19, the Bruce County
Federation of Agriculture organized a total
of 14 people to make calls on farmers in
Bruce Township. Regional director, Herb
Henkenhof of RR #3 Tiverton, did an
excellent job of arranging workers and
compiling a record of farmers in the
township.
Of 179 farmers listed, approximately 2/3
were contacted and made more familiar
kith the county organization. During these
2 days, 28 new members were recruited
and total membership in Bruce Township
now stands at 112. Furthermore, 21 new
names were added to the Farm and
Country mailing list which Bruce County
Federation provides free of charge to all
county farmers.
Those who helped out during the two
days deserve thanks from all of us. They
are: Don Ahrens, Henry Anness, Earl
Dahmer, Borden Fenton, Herb Henkenhof,
Brian Ireland, Jack McGillivray, Roy
Pennington, Harold Poechman, John
Roppel and Ken Roppel.
John Findlay Resolution
A resolution put forward by one of our
members was presented at the August 16th
O.F.A. directors meeting in Toronto. It
asked that
Whereas Ontario Hydro is destroying bush
on some landowners' property along high
tension lines being built, and
Whereas the land on which bush is cut is
made unproductive for any other use, and
Whereas the farmer has a loss in dollar
value from the cutting of immature trees,
and
Whereas there is also a loss of small
_unsaleable trees which could be called
reforestation, and
Whereas there is a loss of maple syrup
production which is a growing industry
today, and
Whereas bush is an environmental asset to
agriculture
Therefore be it resolved that the Govern-
ment of Ontario put pressure on the
Ontario Hydro to pay injurious affection to
every farmer on the right-of-way who has
had bush cut on his property and
Further be it resolved that Ontario Hydro
pay injurious affection for the future
potential loss of income to the landowner
and that loss be estimated for a period of
not less than 20 years.
The motion carried.
Action by Federation
The Ontario Federation of Agriculture
will be inserting new insight questions in
future Farm Management Digests, starting
next month. The questions raised by these
articles will be discussed at the next Bruce
County Federation monthly meetings.
Where possible the Bruce Federation will
get informed people to talk at these
meetings and lead discussions.
September 12th Meeting at Underwood
The Bruce County Federation of Agri-
culture will hold its next members meeting
September 12th at the Underwood
Community Centre. Brian Donaldson of the
Local Organization Board will discuss the
New Line Fence Act. Much of the
NEWSLETTER
recommendations of this act are contrary to
O.F.A. policy and the discussion should be
lively.
