OFA Directors' rneeting
July 19, 1978
By Maurice Bean
There was a good attendance at this months meeting with
Huron being well represented by its Regional Directors: Jerry
Fortune, Merle Gunby. Jim Macintosh and Maurice Bean.
Gordon H ill - Past President and Adrian Vos for the Ontario Pork
Board were also present.
President Peter Hannam opened the meeting and gave a brief
sketch of O.F.A.'s activites. He stated that O.F.A.'s Farm Price
Index was gaining in importance and is now being sought by
News Media with other segment of the Food Industry following
with defensive statements. Peter said it used to be. when others
made statements. it was the Farmers that went on the defense.
G.A.T.T. negotiations still have a lot of hurdles to cross but
Agriculture will play an important role in the discussions as
the U.S.A. wants their farm products to enter Europe. This
policy is shared by Canada as well.
the effect of the Packers Strike on Hog. $roducers was
discussed.Adrian Vos reported that the loss due' to the strike to
farmers amounts to about $5.00 per hog. He stated that the
Packers that are operating. are doing a marvelous job in
handling the increased number of hogs and producers could help
the situation by not shipping hogs that are on the light side.
The Ontario Wheat Marketing Board became a member of the
O.F.A. and Mr. Jim McWilliam of Pickering is the Board
Director to O.F.A. Correspondence.
A letter from Chairman Ken McKinnon of the Ontario Milk
Marketing Board stated a change recompensation for animals is
anticipated but it is too soon to give a definite statment.
A letter from Agriculture Minister Whalen stated that F.I.L.
loans Authorization terminates June 30. 1980 unless it is revised
and continued. The present maximum is $75.000.
Gordon Hill reported on the Foreign Aid Project in Sierra
Leone. The Committee recommends that we terminate our
financial involvement as a New Farni Manager has been found in
Africa and is being supported by another Organization. O.F.A.
policy. is that no money of the Organization shall be used. but
voluntary funds are needed to meet our obligations to the
present time.
Grains Committe: The Petition for calling a vote for a Corn
Marketing Board now has over 1.500 signatures of Corn
Producers as a result the Petition will now be presented to the
Minister of Agriculture.
A Provisional Board for Corn Marketing is recommended to be
established, this Board would be responsible for the spade work
needed when a vote is called.
Hydro committee recommendations:
1. Where the differentialbetween rural residential and rural
farm rates has increased with restructured Hydro Commission in
the Region of Waterloo; therefore be it resolved that OFA assist
County Federations on behalf of farmers whenever affected ,to
the appropriate authorities.
2. Hydro's leaseback policy resulting in nominal rentals for
Corridor land is only between Hydro and the original owner.
OFA should press the appropriate authorities to insure that
this nominal rental be extended to future owners.
