The Rural Voice, 1978-08, Page 31Effective chemical control for annual
weeds is available in such combinations as
Lasso and Linuron or other combinations.
If sown in 7 -inch rows, the crop rapidly
forms an umbrella over the ground which
cuts off light and aids in weed control.
Early planting (May 20] gives higher
yield than June plantings and rate of
seeding is a bushel per acre for 14 -inch
rows and a bushel and a half for 7 -inch
rows. Crusting may be a problem on
heavier soils, and a rotary hoe or harrows
should be available to break the crust if it
forms before plants emerge. Since early
varieties pod close to the ground, the field
may have to be packed to enable the
combine to operate low enough to pick up
the bottom pods.
During combining, the cutter bar is
where most of the problems show up. A
floating bar and sharp knives cut down on
losses. "Go slow and get more" is a good
motto at harvest time.
Whether you are interested in soybeans
as a cash crop, or as homegrown feed, it
will be worth your while to check out the
new early varieties that will be available
over the next few years. There may not be
79 reasons why you should grow soybeans,
but there are a lot of reasons for you to
think soybeans for '79.

UHT milk may soon be
common in supermarkets
While Canadians last year bought nearly
two billion quarts of fluid milk, only a tiny
fraction of it was UHT (Ultra High
Temperature) milk. However, that
situation may be changing.
"In Europe most milk is UHT, and it's
only a matter of time until it becomes a
common sight in Canadian supermarkets,"
says Jackson Gardner, chief of markets and
merchandising in Agriculture Canada's
dairy division.
Mr. Gardner says the beauty of UHT
milk is that it can be kept unrefrigerated
for at least 60 days. Normal milk only keeps
for about 10 days and must be refrigerated.
"In Quebec City, about 17 per cent of
fluid milk is UHT. A plant was recently
built in Edmonton and now plans are in the
works to set up UHT milk processing
facilities in Kitchener andVancouver."
Usually, when milk is pasteurized it is
heated to 53 degrees Celsius for 16
seconds. In the UHT process, the milk is
heated to 73 degrees Celsius for only two
seconds. All living bacteria are killed and
the milk preserved.
UHT milk is packed into aluminum -lined
cartons. which can be stacked on pallets
and easily moved from the dairy to the
supermarket floor.
"The cost is now about five cents a quart
higher for UHT milk, but the savings in
easier handling could bring the price down
to normal fluid milk prices as the volume
increases," Mr. Gardner says.
He notes that a Vancouver processor is
now using the UHT proccess to make
long-lasting fruit juice and puddings.
"Probably the process will be most
useful in supplying northern and outlying
areas where there is a problem with
frequent milk deliveries. Already, the
Department of National Defence is using
UHT milk in the North and on ships," Mr.
Gardner says.
He predicts that consumption of UHT
milk in cities will likely increase as
processors develop techniques to remove
the slightly 'cooked' flavor. An enzyme
made from whey is now being tested in the
U.S. It may improve the taste of UHTmilk.
Federal and provincial government
officials are now negotiating uniform
standards, for both interprovinicial move-
ment and export trade.
