Support tough tariff talks Although not many resolutions were passed as the result of a three day meeting in July between Canada's agriculture ministers in Yorkton, Saskatchewan the provincial ministers did pass a resolution supporting the federal stance in in- ternational trade talks to have Canadian farm products treated equitably in terms of tariffs. Whelan also made some surprise remarks when he stated that there appeared to be no rush for a national broiler chicken agency which had been given approval in principle by the federal cabinet 13 months ago. At that time, Whelan had beaten back the opposition of some other ministers. He said it might be better politics to wait until the trade talks are completed before setting, up the chicken agency. It was also reported at the meeting by statistics Canada that food price increases helped push the 12 month inflation rate to 9.2 per cent and that beef prices jumped 70.3 per cent in the last 12 months. Whelan said that this was just a surge and would likely slow down or recede later this year.
