He said that erosion affects everyone
and that taxpayers had to foot the bill for
cleaning up the ,messes caused by soil
erosion, especially when the soil is blown
onto country roads or carried by streams
and deposited in harbors which have to be
dredged, he said. Herbicides and
fertilizers are also released into the
waterways when the top soil is washed
away.
"The time is long past when you could
make the statement, "It's my property, I
can do what I like." he said.
Support tough tariff talks
Although not many resolutions were
passed as the result of a three day meeting
in July between Canada's agriculture
ministers in Yorkton, Saskatchewan the
provincial ministers did pass a resolution
supporting the federal stance in in-
ternational trade talks to have Canadian
farm products treated equitably in terms of
tariffs.
Whelan also made some surprise
remarks when he stated that there
appeared to be no rush for a national
broiler chicken agency which had been
given approval in principle by the federal
cabinet 13 months ago. At that time,
Whelan had beaten back the opposition of
some other ministers.
He said it might be better politics to wait
until the trade talks are completed before
setting, up the chicken agency.
It was also reported at the meeting by
statistics Canada that food price increases
helped push the 12 month inflation rate to
9.2 per cent and that beef prices jumped
70.3 per cent in the last 12 months.
Whelan said that this was just a surge
and would likely slow down or recede later
this year.
No agreements were made on programs
which would be ot i;Pnefit to the country's
farmers or consumers alth'ugh an
observer did say policies were tiscussed
which might bear fruit in a couple of years.
