NWT farmers want
land use policy
Members of the Northwest Territories
(NWT) Farmers Association received no
support on an agricultural land policy from
their urban neighbours when an Economic
Prospects Conference was held in Hay
River NWT recently.
No mention of land use was even made
in the 54 -page presentation, one of the last

tobe made during the three day conference
and agriculture generally was ignored at
the conference.
"We had really hoped for some firm
support and recommendations on
immediate government action on land
use," said TFA president Ben Greenfield.
"It seems obvious now that we do not even
have the support of this town."
The NWT government had promised an
agricultural land use policy by December
31, 1977 and then by March 31, 1978 but
nothing was said by NWT officials in
Yellowknife or at the Conference that
would give any indication. of when thc
policy would appear.
"There isn't much wc can do now but
wait again," Greenfield said. "1 guess
we'll all put our crops in. and go ahead as
we have all the other years. But we have to
have land opened up soon, the government
can't stall forever."
Renewable resources were talked about
in the Town's "Proposals for a Demo-
graphic Approach to Economic Develop-
ment in the Northwest Territories" but
they were listed as fur, fish, game and
timber with no suggestion that agriculture
even on a market -garden basis be
considered as a renewable and expandable
resource.
The TFA members felt that they had
already proved the viability of such
ventures and that there was no way they

could do more unless expansion is allowed
by more land being made available for
larger operations.
The farmers at thc Conference also
presented figures from a 1964 government
bulletin entitled. Farming Potential in the
Canadian Northwest which said. "These
figures based on consumption and prices
then, give a total value of some $43 million
which could be realized by the sale of cggs,
beef, pork, poultry. potatotes, carrots and
cabbage and produced and marketed
within the Territories.
"We wouldn't want to goout and cnd up
with more expenses than we could bcar
just to prove a point", Ben Greenfield
indicated. "We want to expand because wc
know and believe that farming can be
viable here --we're not people just off on
some idea or sort of game; wc all know
what we're talking about and what we're
doing and would like to do. We'd like the
chance to prove this properly."
