The Rural Voice, 1978-07, Page 7"After all, it's obstetrics - childcare," says Miss Brown.
Florence Pullen agrees - she feels sheep farming is a natural
occupation for women, since they have more patience with the
animals, particularly at lambing time.
"Women seem to have a knack" she says, and in the past two
to three years. eight women have visited her for advice on
setting up their own sheep farming operation.
Talked to Veterans
Seeking and giving advice seems to be an important part of
today's agriculture industry. Most of the women admit they
talked to a number of veterans in the farming industry before
setting up their own operations, and now, some of them are
being approached by others who want some good no-nonsense
information about what lies ahead.
Bev Brown says when she and Jean started their operation,
"we left no stone unturned that would contribute to our failure."
The women both recommend spending some time with the
experts, either OMAF people or staff at the University of
Guelph.
Also, be careful of government offers and "study" - read
current farm publications and go to some courses. Bev Brown
says too many people still have the idea "any fool can farm!"
But, one point that's particularly important is the selection of
your financial advisor - Miss Brown advises that both your
accountant and your lawyer should know about farming.
Because "farming is a business", Miss Brown and Miss
Moorby found their management training helped considerably,
since "you have 'to feel comfortable constantly making
decisions."
Mrs. Pullen, who says she'd need between 250 and 300
breeding ewes to be completely self-sufficient, now has an
average of one person a week dropping by with questions on the
sheep breeding business.
She finds her visitors come from both rural and urban
backgrounds, and says, "They'll probably do alright because

Right now, the sheep industry is enjoying an upswing.
Although she originally started raising stock for market, Mrs.
Pullen now breeds purebred Suffolks.
Special Care
She finds by taking particular care at lambing time, which
means being out in the barn every. hour on the hour, she can
"save quite a few Iambs" since she's on the spot. Over the
